Terrific L.A. Date Ideas

The Magic Castle. An evening of magical enchantment. If you can find a way to get invited to this up-scale highly exclusive member’s only club, it is an experience you will never forget. Magic and mystery exist at every turn in this extravagant and whimsical establishment.

Aside from being able to tour the fascinating mansion itself (look out for booby traps and make sure you see the haunted piano), there are a number of showrooms featuring live magic. Some are quite big and fitted for large audiences, while others are small, intimate, and more interactive.  All of them distinct and likely to make you believe in magic again. The Magic Castle also has drinks, dining, and will host private parties.  Note the dress code:  Ladies generally wear evening gowns, and men in suits.  And to be honest, it really adds to the glamour of it all, so dress to the nines.

The Underground Kitchen. The Underground Kitchen is a private supper club serving up a multi-course dinner with wine pairing…need I say more??? Each meal brings together seasonal, locally sourced, organic ingredients to ensure each bite will be delightful and fresh. Dinners are held monthly, joining 12 – 14 guests, though you need not book the entire table, reserving a spots for two will get you in (or go alone to eat and mingle!) Enjoying delicious food and wine while engaging with other food enthusiasts provides for a most unique and satisfying experience. Dinners are hosted in the Studio City / Toluca Lake area. Seats are limited so be sure to make a reservation in advance. Bon appétit!

The Dresden. Class, martinis and live music. This place is always hoppin’ and as “Old Hollywood” as it gets with its lounge singing duo and 50’s decor. Even the bartenders look like they just stepped out of The Good Fellas movie. Whether seated in a booth or around the piano, you are transcended back to a simpler time as you listen to Marty and Elayne perform classics from Sinatra to Ella Fitzgerald.  They are on every night at 9 p.m. (except Sunday) and happy to take requests.

The Hollywood Bowl. Wine and beautiful music under the stars can be appreciated no matter where you sit. But if so ambitious, purchasing or borrowing a box seat for the night is truly icing on the cake, and comes with a catering service from The Patina Group if willing to splurge a little. However, with a quick stop at Gelson’s you can pack your own picnic basket for two. During the Summer session, the Hollywood Bowl often features shows with firework-finales.

Sunset Ranch Dinner Ride. Saddle up and ride your horse on a scenic trail through the Hollywood Hills ending up at one of two dining locations where you will dismount and enjoy a hearty meal before heading back down the mountain.  This is not your cheesy horseback ride down the beach reserved only for those on vacation. It is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors, and try something new. I had a blast!

No equestrian experience needed, they will fit you with a horse suited to your needs. They also have day rides and trips.

The Derby. Swing Dancing Sundays. If you are looking to make like Jon Favreau and Heather Graham in Swingers, this is your place. Literally, this where they filmed the swing dancing scene. There is also a full bar, plush velvet seating, and a vibrant luxurious atmosphere. To make a night of it, head next door to Louise’s Trattoria for dinner beforehand (or after). The BackBar of The Derby hosts Swing dancing and even lessons every Sunday night starting at 7 p.m..
